To sum up the points I’m making, Twitter’s stance is that they intend to *advance* global conversation. But if you do not consciously choose direction you are almost always supporting the direction of those who already have the strongest, most privileged, voices.

Twitter goes on to say that deleting [hateful] tweets will hide important information. Yet at the same time say that this will not silence the voice. So which one is it? Twitter is certainly capable of discussing topics that do not originate on the platform.

In a worrying display of doublespeak, Twitter then asserts that they are working hard to remain unbiased, after literally just saying that they are biased when it comes to how they value the tweets of leaders. They treat them according to political context.

This line also worries me: ”We are working to make Twitter the best place to see and freely discuss everything *that matters*.” (my emphasis). Obviously then Twitter have an idea of what matters, which puts a bit of a damper on the word ”freely”.

Missing from this announcement is any reference to Twitter’s own terms of use, the notion of suspending accounts (they only bring up deleting tweets), and the primary reason we are even having this discussion: Donald Trump. There is an elephant in the room that should be named.

Also there is a lot of ”we” and ”best” in the last paragraph that I could not avoid poking fun at. Very little said about the people the platform intends to support(?). youtube.com/watch?v=vp1wdJKpIh8
