      1. 1. Came across a hugely interesting mobile video use-case yesterday. We are testing live video calls with nurses and the project manager’s phone showed a pause button on the live video feed. Not part of the implementation and not showing on anyone else’s phone.

      2. As it turns out, they had Low Power Mode turned on to save battery, on an iPhone. This adds a pause button on live video. We haven’t replicated on Android. Is this a problem…? Well here’s what their thought was: they could pause their video feed. Seems obvious. BUT…

    3. …pausing their own video feed made them assume it was also paused for the nurse on the other end. It wasn’t. It was still very much live, with sound and everything. So, just a local “battery saving” feature.

      4. Now I don’t have to tell you what can happen in front of a camera when people assume nobody can see them. This past year has provided numerous, viral examples. Apple, you could implement this way better.

        5. I’m glad we caught this, because now we can address it. We have to find a way of informing people on in Low Power Mode that pausing their own local feed won’t pause the actual feed. No small challenge. But, now you know as well. Add Low Power Mode to your test scheme.

          6. And a final word of advice: The only way you can feel truly safe with the idea that nobody can see you on camera, is if you cover that camera up.

            7. And yes, we do have a separate button for turning off the cam, for those who wish to do so in the moment.
