      1. Hearing Yuval Noah Harari talk about democracy, nationalism (in the sense of having compassion for people you do not know, not the hate version of nationalism), and how elections are not a necessary marker for a democracy – has had me in deep thought all week.

I hesitate to link to the podcast because I am also very frustrated with the blind techsolutionism offered by the hosts. And am not a huge fan of Humane Tech org. But here you go. It's two hours, not many will listen to it anyway ;) overcast.fm/+Rs4uLFhlQ

I am also frustrated with how Harari keeps referring to an AI that "knows" more about you than you yourself know. Using the word "knows" infers a type of sentience that risks misleading people. More intrigued by the lack of ethics philosophy to address the next paradigm shift.

To get where I'm coming from with my techsolutionism comment: When Tristan and Asa keep talking about an AI sidekick that helps you make healthy choices all I can think about is a child in DR Congo mining cobalt for their AI batteries.

Their wild confidence in how behavior adjustment works (and what is worth adjusting) is revealing about their value system. Harari challenges this from time to time. Do I make the AI help me become a "beautiful person" or help me appreciate who I already am?

I need to write something about all these impressions but it's hard to make it about one thing right now. We'll see if mindmapping helps.
